The Tokyo People of My Generation is a collection of proses written by Arai Hifumi. Tokyo in Ozu Yasujiro’s memory is the golden night scene seen through the reed door of the Gochome eel shop when the large clock of Ginta tolls 8 p.m. punctually. Tokyo in Lu Xun’s memory is the fireflies dancing elegantly on the Edo River seen from the dormitory window in summer nights. Tokyo in Murakami Haruki’s memory is to live in a shabby narrow house shaped like slice bread and enjoy the sunshine and wind for free. Tokyo in its old citizens is aeolian bells, coal, mosquito-repellent incense and tatami, is the poor but happy life before the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. Tokyo in Arai Hifumi’s memory is to dig clams on the beach of Tokyo Bay in Spring, catch eels in Kanda River in summer, listen to the music of the past in the hundred-year-old wooden music hall in Ueno Park.
